European Technology Forum 2009 - Press Release
Fujitsu Advances Green Data Centre Strategy with Total CO2 and Value Analysis Solution
Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe unveils its latest Green Data Centre development at the European Technology Forum
London, UK, Wednesday, 16th September - Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe Limited announced today the launch of its latest Green Data Centre development at the European Technology Forum, hosted by Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe in London (16-17 September 2009). Fujitsu's Total CO2 and Value Analysis solution is the result of extensive research and development, in conjunction with the Carbon Trust in the UK, the company set up by the UK Government to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy.
Based on a core simulator developed through industry collaboration and with the support of the Carbon Trust to analyse energy use and carbon emissions in data centres and identify potential reductions, Fujitsu Laboratories' new technology represents a revolutionary approach. It breaks new ground in enabling a holistic analysis of energy usage within a data centre environment to be captured, quantitatively analysed and profiled, from the physical infrastructure, to the software, applications and delivered services.
The energy used by data centres is an increasingly significant economic and social responsibility issue, with Fujitsu's own global operation of over 75 data centres acting as a key driver behind the Green Data Centre project. Although new-build data centres are highly efficient, the company is focused on researching new ways of improving energy efficiency in both existing and future locations, by implementing new techniques and management practices. Rising costs are another major factor, with recent price increases resulting in energy consumption accounting for 40% or more of data centre operating budgets.
Commenting on the project, Hugh Jones, Director of Solutions at the Carbon Trust, said:
"Controlling energy use and its attendant costs is increasingly a corporate priority, especially now that governments around the world are legislating to reduce carbon emissions. Data centres currently account for a quarter of IT-related carbon emissions and their contribution to climate change is likely to increase as the number of data centres grows. We welcome the work Fujitsu Laboratories has done in using our simulator to build a technology that gives companies an insight into their energy consumption, enabling them to reduce it as well their operating costs and their carbon emissions."
Dr Fumihiro Maruyama, Managing Director of Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe Ltd, explains the central tenets of Fujitsu's approach:
"A truly green data centre involves combining many different facets, from the correct initial design and provisioning of the centres infrastructure, to adopting a holistic management process that can optimise its energy-efficient operation. This essential combination of efficient infrastructure and management underpins our entire Green Data Centre initiative. Here in the UK, we have been working with the Carbon Trust, building specific extension applications to operate on its simulator core, launched earlier this year. Our focus has revolved around data entry, visualisation and analysis, using a Fujitsu data centre as a real-world example for our development.
"The result is a revolutionary new toolset that enables us to improve energy efficiency and CO2 footprints within existing data centres, based on a quantitative understanding of the complexities of data centre infrastructures and their operation. It also forms the basis of Fujitsu's new Total CO2 and Value Analysis solution, which will be available for a range of data centre applications. These are exciting developments that will have a major impact on our ability to transform data centre operation and realise the green data centre of the future."
Fujitsu's Total CO2 and Value Analysis solution will be available for a cross-section of data centre applications including:
- the optimisation of existing data centres, across static and dynamic management, enabling significant energy cost savings and regulatory compliance
- equipment selection analysis, focusing on identifying the most appropriate and energy efficient solutions for a specific data centre requirement
- whole lifecycle planning, enabling improved design, location selection and ROI estimation for new data centres
- CO2 reporting on an individual service basis within a data centre
- a complete CO2 management service, incorporating enterprise planning and execution to minimise the environmental burden of facilities
Fujitsu's new Total CO2 and Value Analysis technology will be exhibited at Fujitsu's European Technology Forum 2009 (see www.fujitsutechnologyforum.com) and is scheduled to be deployed in trials at Fujitsu's data centres during 2010.

About The Carbon Trust - The Carbon Trust is an independent company set up in 2001 by Government in response to the threat of climate change, to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy by working with organisations to reduce carbon emissions and develop commercial low carbon technologies.
- We cut carbon emissions now by giving business and the public sector expert advice, finance and certification to help them reduce their carbon footprint and to stimulate demand for low carbon products and services
- Since 2001 weve helped UK business save over 17 million tonnes of CO2, and more than 1billion. These savings will double by 2011 as we give support and advice to even more UK businesses
- In 2008 alone the Carbon Trust supported half a million UK businesses, saving companies over 200 million from their annual energy bills and cutting up to 2.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from their annual emissions
- We cut future carbon emissions by developing new low carbon technologies
- We are helping the UK become a global hub for low carbon innovation. We do this through funding and managing projects, investing and collaborating on low carbon technologies and by identifying market barriers and practical ways to overcome them. Our work on commercialising new technologies will save over 20 million tonnes of carbon a year by 2050
- The Carbon Trust is undertaking world leading projects on offshore wind, algae and advanced solar power
